 Located midway between Agrigento and Caltanissetta, on a hilly area, there is Canicattì whose name has its roots in the Charm of Arab culture. Populated by about thirty-five thousand inhabitants, the city‘s economy is predominantly agricultural and commercial. Every street in the historic centre is a world that is revealed, a journey rich in history and myth. Cradled by the delicate fragrance of sweet dishes, and first courses tourists can admire the numerous churches of extraordinary artistic and architectural interest, such as the magnificent Cathedral St. Pancras Renaissance celebrating the patron saint of the city. The interior has a Latin cross, which contains valuable paintings and a marble statue of Modonna of Grace of the Byzantine age. Must be reported, in addition, the towering majestic palaces and spectacular social theater in Art Nouveau style by the architect Ernesto Basile. Rich of popular tradition, like the Epiphany (li tri re), Carnival, S. Crucifix (lu tri di Maiu), the exhibition of the Rosary and the Bonfire of the Immaculate (li vamparotti), the city was the birthplace of the venerable Padre Gioacchino La Lomia and martyrs of justice Rosario Livatino and Antonino Saetta. Canicattì, hospitable and generous, it is certainly a surprise for all those who fail to appreciate the charm and authenticity of alternative tourism. 

 

Canicattì: city to know and to love - Canicattì offers visitors a nice walk of history, art and culture. The church of the Venerable Padre Gioacchino La Lomia, with its convent, offers a profound spiritual peace. Apart from the winding streets and picturesque, stands the extraordinary monumental complex of the Badia, which consists of the convent of Benedictine nuns (now the museum ) and the Church of Saints Philip and James, envelops visitors in a bewitching atmosphere of myths and legends. Nearby, in the Dome square, on a top of a steep staircase, stands the motherchurch of the eighteenth century. Worth a visit the spectacular palaces, extraordinary examples of residential architecture. The journey continues in IV Novembre square where the exuberant fountain of Neptune, the emblem of the city, capturing the attention of those who are fascinated by its natural elegance. Full of enticing and enchanting beauty looks, however, the social theater. The walk ends at wide castle that houses the ruins of the Castel Bonanno at the foot of the Civic Tower which stands alone.
