> Feast of San Calogero Agrigento
Feast of San Calogero
92100 Agrigento

Religious and folk presentations:

Also called the Black Saint, San Calogero along with San Gerlando are the patrons of the city.

During the procession that winds around the historic city center with the statue carried by its devoted bearers, people usually throw the "muffuletti" of San Calo from their windows (traditional loaves of bread with sesame and fennel seeds). The whole procession is accompanied by the frantic pace of drums in the characteristic "Diana" mode that recall arabesque sounds and music.

An ancient Agrigento tradition tells us of a time during a severe epidemic when an old religious wiseman of medical practices was accompanied by a drum roll through the city demanding bread and food for the sick banished outside of the city walls.
