Festival of Tataratà
Piazza Duomo - 92025 Casteltermini

A religious festival, that  during the year is celebrated in the province of Agrigento, of the Holy Cross, also called the feast of Tataratà held in Casteltermini on the fourth Sunday of May. It is undoubtedly one of the most characteristic of Sicily. It is the celebration that recalls the discovery of the ancient Cross. The Saracen tone is the reason Arabian drums play with a precise rhythmic sequence (hence the name "Tataratà") with a group of dancers in Arab costume armed with iron swords, in a frenzied, slightly dangerous dance-battle . The presence of an Arabic theme in a Christian holiday intends to express the peaceful coexistence between the two ethnic groups in the same territory at the time of the Normans. The exhibition made by a group of dancers who regularly train using a sword, presents a series of movements and figures in pairs and in groups. The protagonists facing each other in a circle or frontwards evoke the gestures, movements and blows of a skirmish during a real battle. The festivities begin on Friday with the procession of the Triumphal Chariot to the hermitage from where the procession proceeds with the Holy Cross through the streets of the town.

The high point of the whole festivity is Piazza Duomo, where the representatives of the working classes parade wearing precious seventeenth-century costumes on magnificent, beautifully adorned horses. The Castelterminesi have an innate passion for horses and the feast of the Holy Cross is an opportunity to show the beauty of their steeds and tricks they can do. They are real performances where imposing and proud horses in their gait spectacularly perform movements comparable to dance steps. In this kind of elegant competition there is no shortage of riders who often find themselves competing with aggressive riders willing to make "cavalrous" gestures.
