The Natural Reserve "Grotta di Sant'Angelo Muxaro" was established in 2000. The protected area covers approximately 21 hectares and is located at the foot of the hill of Sant'Angelo Muxaro and is characterized by two distinct zones:

Zone A special reserve, which coincides with the development of underground and on the surface, with the areas bounding the main entrance of the cave;

Zone B of preriserva, protecting the watershed that feeds the karst cave: it is a blind valley engraved on clay underlying evaporites.

 

In the Cave Ciavoli are visible splendid crystallization and a number of forms related to karst, especially an interesting column. Along the way are impressive figures meandering, chimneys and small salt intake of collapse. The cavity ends in a pond. In areas close to the reserve, along the course of this valley, there are also other karst cavities, which form the complex called "Caves of 'Water'. The flow of water along the riverbed is by continuous ingrottamenti and riaffioramenti in an attractive environment characterized by high natural.

La Grotta di Sant 'Angelo is also an' important archaeological center of Prehistory, where systematic excavations have witnessed ancient settlements. Caves and tombs tholos (eighth and seventh century BC) reveal the traces of an ancient pre-Hellenic and Greek necropolo. Nature, around the cave karst, is lush and intense Mediterranean.

In the territory, with various species typical of hill and mountain areas, the fauna includes martens, Raven and also Bonelli's eagle.
